Fly Fishing

Driving south, on the Tamiami Trail, the patches of fog and stagnant air signal that’s its going to be a good tarpon day. There is a smell in the air during tarpon season that is humid, sweet, and salty all at the same time. Everything is lining up, the water temperature, air temperature, and weather. It is early April in Everglades City, just four days after a cold front, but the water is 75 degrees and warming by the minute. I know the fish have to be flowing into the bays right now. The push poles slides me quietly into a bay, as I scan looking for signs of life. Bloop, the distinct sound of a tarpon rolling. They’re here.
